Day 13 - Ligtning Ridge

Today I spent most of the day working and George lurking around the van, chatting and doing his thing.

Tilly never goes too far away from me but also likes to keep and eye on Georgie.

After lunch we decided to tackle the last of the coloured door tours so off we headed on the "Blue Door" tour.  This took us up to Bald Hill.    This is the only ridge line without a tree line.    Miners know the strength of trees mean the roots have found cracks and crevices seeking water.    A line of trees in an indicator that water has reach the sandstone level and found the opal clay level.

Located on this tour is Bevan's Black Opal & Cactus Nursery which has over 2300 species of cacti and over 48 varieties of bougainvillea.

As this was our last night in Lightning Ridge we left Tilly on guard in the caravan and headed to the local Bowling Club for dinner.     Well little did we know that the members draw had reached over $14,000.00 and every man and his wife, son, daughter, grandkids etc had come in to the Club for the draw.      It took us about 15 mins to get to the sign in counter where we had to join for a massive $3.00 and were given a $3.00 voucher in return to spend in the Club.

We found ourselves a comfortable little table and then looked at the queue to order dinner.   We waited for about half an hour without the queue getting really any shorter so I jumped on.     Well the wait was forever but I struck up a conversation with what turned out to be a local miner and his mate who later joined us for dinner.

George bought some raffle tickets and as usual our luck was nowhere to be found.   However, the conversation with our two dinner guests was fascinating and entertaining.    It was a great night, the $14,000.00 was won by a local and the meal really good.

We retired back to the van with a lot of mining stories spinning in our heads.
