Lightning Ridge - Day 12

A quite morning loitering around the caravan, doing a bit of work, repairing gas lines, still no diesel heater which will hamper some of our travels and just re-arranging a few things.

We decided to do the "Yellow Door" tour today through the Three Mile Opal fields which took us up to Lunatic Hill and believe me once you see the deep gorge that has been eked out from lunatic miners looking for opals you can appreciate how much dirt and stone is being shifted in the crazy business of opal mining.

These roads are littered with graveyards of rusty treasures and mine shafts some of which were dug by hand.   There is no way you go wandering around these mine fields at night,

George then remembered the sculptures outside the workshop where he picked up the battery for the car and took me for a drive to "Shinecracker Drive" (love that name).   George has decided they have too much time on their hands out here.

To finish off our day we took the sunset "Green Door" tour up to Nettleton's first shaft lookout and historical reserv.  The oldest shaft in the opal fields, the bottle house and of course a beautiful sunset.

The gravel around the reserve is colourful and includes petrified wood, jasper, quartz, agates, carnelian and clear topaz.    However not an opal to be seen.

A very relaxed old couple (yes odd too).
